Amir Abdullah is a highly respected American DJ, curator, music historian, sample excavator, and producer. His passion for jazz catapulted him into the spotlight as one half of the iconic mixtape and DJ duo, Kon & Amir. With his own label, 180-Proof Records, founded in 2011, he further solidified his place in the music industry and continues to push the boundaries of adventurous music, uncovering forgotten artists and sounds ever since. He recently executive produced Strata Records – The Sound of Detroit, reimagined by Jazzanova, a project that highlights his expertise and dedication to preserving musical history and fostering education.
In this conversation, DJ Amir talks about his profound connection to Hip Hop and lets us in on his exciting upcoming projects and collaborations.

This month we had the honour to interwiev Chicago born jazz multi-instrumentalist and composer Kahil El’Zabar. Born in 1953, the talented percussionist collaborated with musical legends such as Dizzy Gillespie, Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Paul Simon, Pharoah Sanders, and many others. El’Zabar continues to mesmerize audiences worldwide with his meditative yet invigorating sound, aiming to promote wellness and spiritual empowerment through his music. With his main musical groups the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble and the Ritual Trio, he released more than 30 albums.
In our conversation, Kahil shares about his latest album A Time for Healing and how he, as a young jazz musician got connected with the DJ culture back in the 80ies.
Bill Brewster is a celebrated DJ, music historian, and author known for his deep knowledge of dance music culture and eclectic, genre-spanning DJ sets. Co-author of the seminal book Last Night a DJ Saved My Life with Frank Broughton, Brewster has chronicled the history of DJing and club culture through his writing, including the acclaimed The Record Players. As a co-founder of DJHistory.com and curator of compilations like After Dark on Late Night Tales, he has earned a reputation as a tastemaker and archivist of rare and classic records. With decades of experience behind the decks and a passion for uncovering hidden musical gems, Brewster remains a pivotal figure in the global dance music scene.

Neal Sugarman is an American saxophonist, producer, and co-founder of the independent funk and soul label Daptone Records. As both a musician and producer, Sugarman played a key role in defining the Daptone sound, contributing significantly to the revival of soul and funk in the early 2000s. A lifelong enthusiast of soul and jazz, he rose to prominence as the leader of the Sugarman 3 and a core member of the Dap-Kings, the band that backed soul legend Sharon Jones. Over the past two decades, Sugarman’s distinctive saxophone style has been featured on numerous Daptone releases and has led to collaborations with world-renowned artists, including Al Green, Amy Winehouse, and Quincy Jones. Now based in Zurich, Sugarman continues to perform live regularly, working with a variety of exceptional local and international musicians.
In our conversation, Neal reflects on his career, his early days in punk rock bands, and how a commitment to “rawness” has shaped his musical journey.

In-depth interviews and intimate performances provide a rich alternative to the artifice of highly-crafted personas and soundbite culture. Kasheme’s Gallery compliments the objective, offering a space where artists can allow for vulnerabilities, expressing an honest spectrum of emotions.

Shuya Okino is a globally recognized DJ, producer, and cultural icon, best known as one half of Kyoto Jazz Massive, Japan’s pioneering jazz and electronic music duo. A passionate advocate for Japanese club culture, he skillfully blends the influences of jazz and electronic music, connecting audiences around the globe and across different musical landscapes. In addition to his work with Kyoto Jazz Massive, Okino is the founder of the renowned music venue The Room in Tokyo and is also an accomplished author and music curator.
On his second visit to our Livingroom, we sat down with Shuya to talk about his experience at Kasheme and his aspiration to create soundscapes for all kinds of public spaces.

Born in Albania’s capital Tirana, Elina Duni first set foot on a stage at the age of five, singing for the National Radio and Television. After the fall of the communist regime in Albania, she moved to Geneva, where she started her education in classical piano and went on to study on the jazz programme at the Hochschule der Künste in Bern. With her first Quartet and the following releases, she found her signature sound as a singer and songwriter, fusing jazz with Balkan folk music from her homeland.
Since meeting London guitarist Rob Luft in 2017, they express their love for jazz and various other genres by composing as well as playing stages all over Europe together. On their latest album A time to remember, Duni sings in Albanian, French and English, which reflects her rootedness in different European countries and cultures.
In our conversation, Duni and Luft talk about how they met, their first memories of music and their hopes for the future.
Last weekend, Kasheme celebrated another cross-border collaboration. We teamed up with Peti Kupe, a renowned music club in Zagreb, to host an exceptional event. The lineup featured not only our Kasheme DJs and co-owners, J’peux Tim and RUMI, but also Ilija Rudman and Chicago house legend Chez Damier.
“Last weekend, we touched down in Zagreb to bring Chez Damier to Petit Kupe, and right from the start, it felt like something special was about to unfold. Sven picked us up with the best energy, got us settled, and from there, things just started flowing. Vladimir and Zeljko took us around, through the old town, sharing stories, soaking in the pulse of the city, and getting a feel for what was to come.
Later, we met Antonio, the backbone of Petit Kupe, and Ilija Rudman, a true musical soul. Chez Damier arrived, and we all gathered around a table full of incredible Balkan food, laughter, and good conversation. The night was taking shape, and the pulse of it kept growing stronger.
Doors opened, and J’peux Tim & RUMI set the tone with soulful sounds. Then Chez Damier stepped in and took over – disco, soul, and that raw Chicago bass rolling through the room. The dancefloor was pumping, people showed up from all over the country, locked in. Just when we thought we had peaked, Ilja pushed it even further, each track hitting just right, carrying us straight into a sunny morning.
This was a special one. Big love to Zagreb family, Antonio, Ilja, Vedran, Vladimir, Zeljko, Sven and everyone who danced with us. Until next time!”

A few months ago, we had the honour to sit down for a conversation with one of the leading artists of today’s UK jazz scene – Trumpet player and composer Matthew Halsall.
Starting off by playing the trumpet in his early age, he has evolved not only into an extraordinary trumpeter, but also into an outstanding producer and composer whose distinct sound draws on foundations of spiritual jazz, meditative music, sample-fuelled electronica as well as global percussive influences. After releasing nine delicately composed albums and founding his label Gondwana Records in 2008, Halsall and his band headlined London’s prestigious Royal Albert Hall last year – a manifestation of a career spent transcending boundaries and always bringing a singular, and yet ever-changing, perspective.
Sitting on our couch at Kasheme, Halsall shares how his musical journey began as a passionate listener, and how the first instrument he experimented with was not the trumpet.
Laraaji is a New York-based musician and sonic mystic renowned for his ethereal, zither-driven ambient soundscapes. He first gained widespread recognition with his 1980 album Ambient 3: Day of Radiance, produced by Brian Eno as part of Eno’s influential Ambient series. Blending elements of Eastern mysticism, drone, and transcendental meditation, Laraaji’s improvisational style has made his music a cornerstone of the ambient and healing music community. Rooted in joy and mindfulness, his deep spiritual philosophy extends beyond music to transformative practices like laughter meditation, sound healing and yoga. With his uplifting presence, Laraaji continues to inspire and elevate listeners worldwide.
In our conversation, Laraaji explores why sound is a deeply spiritual experience and shares the story of how he discovered the zither, the instrument that would become his signature.
“The intention behind my music is to guide the listeners to a sense of audio awareness, to a place where they feel an eternalness about themselves, a sense that space is unlimited and that the whole universe is going on right now.”

This autumn, we embarked on an exciting musical exchange with the all vinyl audiophile bar, The Big Romance, in Dublin. We had the pleasure of hosting its founders, Stephen Manning and Dave Parle, at Kasheme for a memorable weekend in October. A few weeks ago, our very own Josea and Mumbi Kameri traveled to Ireland, bringing their records and Kasheme Vibes along to entertain the music lovers of Dublin.
Here is what Josi shared:
“Our Dublin trip was filled with great music, good food, and unforgettable moments. We had the chance to play in the studio at Fidelity, where the Hatchett sound system brought our records to life in the most amazing way. The next night, we played a laid-back 5-hour vinyl only set at the legendary Big Romance, surrounded by like-minded people and new friends. Despite the windy and cold weather, we couldn’t resist popping into the pubs for some Guinness, where the air was filled with loud traditional music and the joy of a singing crowd. It was a trip full of warmth, both from the people and the music and we can’t wait to collaborate again in the future.

Every month he will invite music lovers who will present an album that means a lot to them and share their personal stories and anecdotes around this particular record. Exciting stories and musical discoveries guaranteed!

As one of London’s most prized selectors of today, Donna enthrals audiences with spellbinding mixes. Anywhere from jazz, to reggae, to soul – her extensive and diverse record collection makes for mindful storytelling and truly captivating journeys. Her dedicated spirit led her to securing a residency at the East London slow-music haven Brilliant Corners, not to mention regular appearances on the biggest stages worldwide. As a radio show host on NTS and as a guest host on Worldwide FM, Donna has earned herself a place into the hearts of many around the globe.
At her last gig at Kashme earlyer this year, we sat down with Donna and listen to her story of how her dancing skills are connected to her first ever record and how the desire to collect records came to her rather surprisingly.
Playing the piano since the age of 10, Greg Foat is called one of the leading jazz pianists and composers in the UK. Inspired early on by the English pianist Gordon Beck, Foat decided to devote his life to jazz music and composed and released around 28 albums in the last 12 years evolving effortlessly from soul-jazz fusions to cinematic, haunting compositions, pastoral acid folk and electronic soundscapes. In recent years Foat has recorded for Jazzman Records, Athens Of The North and Strut and collaborated with a diverse selection of musicians, including Bob Lind, Moses Boyd, Gigi Masin, Ayo Salawu, Curtis Lundy, The Kooks and many more.
In our conversation, Foat shares about how he was introduced to jazz music and how records played an essential part in his evolution as a musician and composer.
Starting off as a bedroom collector for almost a decade, Millie McKee is an up-and-coming digger and music selector who is impressing global crowds with her knowledge and understanding of many genres. Known from her show on Noods Radio or her mix for My Analog Journal, she now plays not only at the legendary Love Inn in Bristol, but is also holding down regular shows at London & Bristol’s most progressive underground venues. We love Millie’s enchanting presence and her philosophy towards DJing which “resides in a deep, quasi-spiritual soulfulness…”
In our conversation, Millie shares about how she first went into record stores not for the music but the album artwork and how this led her to buy her first ever record which she carries with her to every gig to this day.
