Summer is finally here! Just in time for the “Mediterranean nights”. From this weekend on till mid-August, bars are permitted to keep their outdoor seating space open till 2am on weekends instead of the usual closing time at midnight. That means our guests can enjoy two more hours sitting outside, sipping refreshing drinks, and take advantage of long summer nights.

Born in Albania’s capital Tirana, Elina Duni first set foot on a stage at the age of five, singing for the National Radio and Television. After the fall of the communist regime in Albania, she moved to Geneva, where she started her education in classical piano and went on to study on the jazz programme at the Hochschule der Künste in Bern. With her first Quartet and the following releases, she found her signature sound as a singer and songwriter, fusing jazz with Balkan folk music from her homeland.
Since meeting London guitarist Rob Luft in 2017, they express their love for jazz and various other genres by composing as well as playing stages all over Europe together. On their latest album A time to remember, Duni sings in Albanian, French and English, which reflects her rootedness in different European countries and cultures.
In our conversation, Duni and Luft talk about how they met, their first memories of music and their hopes for the future.

Playing the piano since the age of 10, Greg Foat is called one of the leading jazz pianists and composers in the UK. Inspired early on by the English pianist Gordon Beck, Foat decided to devote his life to jazz music and composed and released around 28 albums in the last 12 years evolving effortlessly from soul-jazz fusions to cinematic, haunting compositions, pastoral acid folk and electronic soundscapes. In recent years Foat has recorded for Jazzman Records, Athens Of The North and Strut and collaborated with a diverse selection of musicians, including Bob Lind, Moses Boyd, Gigi Masin, Ayo Salawu, Curtis Lundy, The Kooks and many more.
In our conversation, Foat shares about how he was introduced to jazz music and how records played an essential part in his evolution as a musician and composer.
Meet Haoua and Azera Doga, the dynamic twin sisters from Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, known as “Les Soeurs Doga”! Blending traditional Mooré songs with contemporary rap-like chants, they tackle pressing issues like terrorism and hunger, turning them into uplifting anthems of positivity.
Their recent shows in Germany, with Hamburg’s beat maker Viktor Marek, went down a storm! Marek, the mastermind behind Golden Pudel Club and projects like The Kings of Dubrock, brought his magic touch to their vibrant performances. Check out their collaboration on Marek’s album “Mr. Subtitle”!

Starting off as a bedroom collector for almost a decade, Millie McKee is an up-and-coming digger and music selector who is impressing global crowds with her knowledge and understanding of many genres. Known from her show on Noods Radio or her mix for My Analog Journal, she now plays not only at the legendary Love Inn in Bristol, but is also holding down regular shows at London & Bristol’s most progressive underground venues. We love Millie’s enchanting presence and her philosophy towards DJing which “resides in a deep, quasi-spiritual soulfulness…”
In our conversation, Millie shares about how she first went into record stores not for the music but the album artwork and how this led her to buy her first ever record which she carries with her to every gig to this day.
Mike Clark aka Agent X – the so-called ambassador of Detroit House – is coming to Kasheme this week. In the 80s he played in legendary discotheques such as L’Uomo, Cheeks, Studio 54 and the Park Avenue Club after joining forces with the then well known Direct Drive DJ Collective. Merging the fast-growing Chicago style with the Euro-disco and progressive sound popular in Detroit, by the late 80s, Clark became a major figure in the birth of ‘Detroit techno’ and became one of the city’s most prolific DJs and producers.

This month we had the honour to interwiev Chicago born jazz multi-instrumentalist and composer Kahil El’Zabar. Born in 1953, the talented percussionist collaborated with musical legends such as Dizzy Gillespie, Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Paul Simon, Pharoah Sanders, and many others. El’Zabar continues to mesmerize audiences worldwide with his meditative yet invigorating sound, aiming to promote wellness and spiritual empowerment through his music. With his main musical groups the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble and the Ritual Trio, he released more than 30 albums.
In our conversation, Kahil shares about his latest album A Time for Healing and how he, as a young jazz musician got connected with the DJ culture back in the 80ies.

In the first edition of our KASHEME CONVERSATION interview series we sat down with Luke Una. As a DJ, a part of the Unabombers and as promoter of the legendary Electric Chair nights, Homoelectric, Electric Elephant Festival and Homobloc, Luke Una was not only contributing massively to Manchester’s 80s and 90s club scene but still carries a deep passion to share his music in clubs around the world. He is the curator of seminal compilations such as the Electric Chair and Electric Soul series, as well as his latest É Soul Cultura project and label.
In our conversation, Una shares what caused his relentless pursuit of music, why he would not call himself a record collector and why he is, as he calls it, so evangelical about music.

On the weekend of February 16th and 17th Spirit Music Society (SMS), in collaboration with Moods and Kasheme invites us to celebrate the 10th anniversary of 22a, a respected independent label in the UK underground music scene.
The weekend starts with a live performance by Ruby Rushton at Moods. The Tenderlonious-led jazz quartet is renowned for their eclectic style with influences from hip hop, Afrobeat, bebop and jazz-funk.
On Saturday, lable founder Tenderlonious and Dennis Ayler will both play a DJ Set at Kasheme, exploring 22a’s rich catalog with 45+ releases, including house, hip hop, jazz, garage, soul, Indian classical and jungle.

From this month on a new event series is launched at Kasheme. With Crate Excursions Pat, a Kasheme resident DJ and record collector for over three decades, opens a space for listening and personal storytelling.
Every month he will invite music lovers who will present an album that means a lot to them and share their personal stories and anecdotes around this particular record. Exciting stories and musical discoveries guaranteed!

Seventeen years have passed since OutKast’s last major release. The greater was the excitement when Andre 3000 announced his first ever solo album in November 2023. Shortly after we were all gifted with something nobody expected. An album with no bars, flows, words, vocals or lyrics but something else: the room to fill in the blanks with your own perceptions.
“New Blue Sun” hypnotizes us with 87 minutes of flutes, bells, chimes, and other diverse instruments produced by Andre, Carlos Niño & Friends. It is a mesmerizing chain of soundscapes that can fit more than one purpose. It doesn’t give you what you want, it offers what we all need: a reminder to calm down, embrace change, and to stay curious when facing the unfamiliar.

We all still remember that night, when we set up two record players on the floor and covered the whole Studio floor with carpets and cushions, leaned back and let ourselves be taken on a unforgettable listening journey. Donna Leake, a young selector from London, created for us a space outside of time. With her diverse and truly captivating selection from jazz to psychedelic rock, from reggae to soul and beyond, and her visible love and passion for music, she undeniably played herself into all of our hearts.
We are extraordinarily excited to have Donna back at Kasheme this January.

The Okino brothers of Kyoto Jazz Massive make their Zurich debut with the Echos Of A New Dawn Orchestra in a not-to-be-missed concert at Moods on the 28th of December.

For the third time the Swiss-Albanian jazz singer Elina Duni performs at Kasheme this December. With her partner and guitarist Rob Luft she carries her audience away with dreamy, poetic, sometimes melancholic, sometimes joyful compositions.

The UK trumpeter, producer and composer Matthew Halsall is coming to Zurich this autumn. Inspired by no less than Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders, Halsall is maybe the most influential spiritual jazz artist of our generation. His calm, vast and meditative compositions are truly transcendental. The kind of Sound that brings peace, harmony and depth into every space. Therefore it is a tremendous honour to have Matthew playing a DJ-Set at Kasheme at the end of the month.
